dear artists on tumblr: this
could you explain to me how those two things are the same? i’m sort of baffled
i’m sorry if i make people feel bad about their art when i complain about my own, but if i say something like “i can’t draw girls!!!! i am terrible!!” i am not actually secretly gloating about how great i am at drawing girls/”everything”
tumblr is a blogging site, and if you follow artists you are also probably going to learn how said artists feel about the work they produce
Every artist I follow on tumblr, when faced with praise, reacts with a typical “aww thanks guys really I don’t deserve this, I suck a lot and am not worth anything, really you should just stop following me now.”
It just seems like no one I follow has respect for their work, and overcompensates by blathering on about how terrible they are and how no one should respect them, no matter how good they are.
If you are a good artist, you must have worked to reach that point, and I get frustrated with people who can’t respect what they worked for. Especially when the praise rolls into their askbox and they still stand by the idea that they’re a worthless, talentless piece of shit.
i think the reason why a lot of the artists who are on tumblr don’t have respect for their own art is because they are stuck in this weird place between amateur hour and Professional Artist Land and they don’t know what they’re doing or where to go next. some people have been stuck in this place for a long time, and it’s a completely natural yet totally frustrating experience. tumblr is a good outlet for that frustration. some people go a little overboard
tumblr is also a great place to fish for compliments while at the same time agonizing over all these 15 year olds who can draw like gods and don’t even realize it in an endless loop of self loathing and self indulgence. some people go a little overboard on that too
i speak from experience on all accounts, and yeah, it’s annoying. sorry.

I am saddened when I see an artist who is super talented but then insults their work. I mean I don’t judge them or start...
On the subject of this being not just in art, remember that every time you insult yourself you are insulting everyone...
I take compliments when I’m given them but just because I may have a slight advantage over you in one area doesn’t mean...
Apparently whining is not a solution, it’s the problem. Solution is: STOP WHINING. GET TO WORK. I do realise that you...
as skilled feel awful.
